Columbia's low quality replacement to the 2010 Titanium BootIn 2010 Columbia Sportswear had a Titanium Bugaboot XTM Omni-Tech Winter Boot. It was a great boot for the money. It gave you support for your foot and the weight of your photo gear as you carried it on your back to your destination. The boot was also sufficiently insulated to keep you acceptably warm while you stood in place capturing images. Things changed in 2011 and seems to be fairly the same for the 2012/2013 winter season. The boot no longer is a Titanium boot. The nice heavy insulation all around the boot, including on top of your toes has disappeared. It’s been replaced with Columbia’s Omni-Heat. A thin insulation covered with little metallic looking dots that reflect your heat back to you. The boot is also lighter than it’s predecessor. Cold Weather Photography; Keeping your hands warm

One of the greatest challenges in cold weather photography is keeping your hands warm while still being able to operate those tiny little buttons and wheels on your camera. Plenty of large expensive mittens and gloves will keep you warm. Unfortunately they are clumsy and just don’t hack it when it comes time to pressing the shutter button or changing your settings on the fly. The answer is not a simple one. I’ve spent many years exploring various solutions and the best I came up with is a compromise, but an acceptable one! My Solution: I have a multi-part solution. First for the outer shell I use a convertible glove (Also known as a sniper glove in tactical and hunting gear stores) They’re also known as Hybrid or fingerless gloves. Upwards of 100,000 Snow Geese during Fall Migration in VictoriavilleAlmost everyone within driving distance of Victoriaville, Quebec that’s into birding and Wildlife photography is heading out to Réservoir Beaudet for the fall migration of Snow Geese. Upwards of a hundred thousand Snow Geese can congregate in this quaint little reservoir across the road from the Lactantia Dairy Plant. From passionate birders to the mere curious, all assemble to admire these birds. They’re just about everywhere you look. On the lawn in the water and up in the sky. The Snow Geese feed mostly in neighboring fields devouring the post harvest left overs. Later in the day the Snow Geese return to the reservoir (Réservoir Beaudet) in clouds of hundreds if not over a thousand Geese at a time. Summer 2012 was a good year for Crab SpidersThis year was a lifer as far as Crab Spiders are concerned. For years I kept an eye out for them as they successfully eluded me. This summer I just found them everywhere I looked. Although I was fortunate in finding them I was always less than in the ideal situation to capture a great image. From only having a telephoto lens on me to high wind gusts making the capture a little less successful. Regardless of the conditions I took the pictures and aimed for the best possible results under the circumstances. This one above in the yellow petal was just tiny. The winds were blowing up to 20Mph and the lighting conditions inadequate, The spider was tucked deep in the petal. There’s always something magical when you encounter a Juvenile Red Fox, especially one you knew when it was just a little kit. This was no exception, as this wonderful Fox is slowly making the transition to adulthood. The interactions are now more aggressive between siblings. They’re approaching the time of year where play will become less important than finding and defending a territory to feed on for winter. This time of year light diminishes fairly quickly in late afternoon. Surrounded by trees it became harder and harder to find a patch of sunlight. I photographed this Fox at 800 ISO using a Nikon D300s with a Nikkor 300mm lens providing plenty of light and quick accurate focus for this time of day. Want more Red Fox images? The D600 is built around a 24MP, 36x24mm, CMOS sensor and crams many of the features of the more expensive D800 into a distinctly D7000-esque body. It features a 100% coverage viewfinder and 39-point autofocus system, nine of which are cross-type points. It can capture 1080p HD video at 30, 25 or 24 frames per second and can stream uncompressed footage out over its HDMI port. There’s also an optional Wi-Fi unit allowing the camera to be controlled remotely from an Android or iOS device. The Jade Emperor and his wife Xi Wangmu (Queen Mother of the West) ensured the deities’ everlasting existence by feasting them with the peaches of immortality. Argiope aurantia Spider – Your Common Black and Yellow Garden Spider

Last Friday I received almost 400 visits from searches regarding yellow and black spiders with Zig Zag patterns in their web. With that in mind Ive updated this article and put it back at the front of the line as little educational F.Y.I. Enjoy! If you live in North America chances are you’ve come across a female Argiope aurantia spider in your back yard, garden or in a field. They’re commonly known as the Common Garden Spider, Black and Yellow Garden Spider, Writing Spider, or Corn Spider. They span from Central America into Canada and various species of them are found across the planet. You will usually see the females as in this particular picture and they can be quite big and impressive. They weave a large transparent Orb Web with a vertical Z pattern in the middle. This week I had the pleasure to come across a whole bevy of Killdeer and a few different Sanderling on the outskirts of Bolsa Chica Nature Preserve right here in Socal! Although the mid-day light was harsh and less favorable I had an absolute blast photographing these birds for a couple of hours. Like all good things the opportunity came to an end when one of the Killdeers took panic and the whole lot evacuated. Once in a while I venture into the city camera in hand. I’m no Street Photographer so Street Photography is entirely out of my comfort zone. Once in a while it’s worth the effort as you can see from this image below! Although I took quite a few images the one below ends up being my favorite for the day! This gentleman was extremely cooperative and great fun on the street.. When I brought to his attention the fact that I was taking pictures he posed for a few more. This one is however the best as it was entirely candid. He disappeared in the crowd as quickly as he had appeared. Teens use pellet gun to bring down birds...Litter, trash, broken glass bottles, prostitution, used condoms and drug paraphernalia are all common sites in Montreal‘s Ile de la visitation Nature Park. (Photos: GALLERY1 – GALLERY2) What I wasn’t expecting was a killing spree in Montreal that left a large number of dead birds along it’s shoreline. As I was taking photos an elderly man approached me and started a conversation. I brought up the dead birds and he informed me that young men were shooting at birds and squirrels with a pellet gun (Hand Gun). It goes without mention that I’m already disgusted by the general state of this nature park. The rest of Montreal and it’s parks are not much better. A few years back I was appalled by Montrealers who carelessly threw their trash all over the city streets. Even more appalling was how they brought that same behavior into the surrounding Nature Parks. Coming from California this was a total culture shock. At the Time I decided to document the over abundant accumulation of trash on the banks of Montreal’s Back River (Rivières des Prairies) along the Île-de-la-Visitation Nature Park. With a bit of pressure from my videos and pictures it appeared that the overall problem was at least being addressed by park and city officials. They are also experts at camouflage in marshes and wetlands regardless of their larger size. The only thing that will give away the presence of this medium sized member of the Heron family is its distinctive bellowing call. Almost everyone who visits marshes as part of a nature walk during the mating season is sure to hear this low billowy sound engulf the marsh. The Mammals photo gallery has recently been updated with three new pictures of a Male Red Fox. One photo is of a chase scene as the Red Fox hunts a Grey Squirrel. This male Red Fox is a newcomer to the area. He’s got a stare that’s like no other, kind of grumpy serious looking. He’s an outstanding hunter who’s currently sharing this territory with a Female Red Fox. If we’re lucky we might see some kits this year! Photographers Chasing Down Fatigued Owls Near Death(VERSION FRANÇAISE) I’m dedicating this blog post in Memory of the Snowy Owl found alongside Highway 30 and rescued by Sylvain Lamoureux, member the Birding Club, COL (Club d’ornithologie de Longueuil) on the 16th of December. Sylvain promptly brought the Owl to the Saint-Hyacinthe Veterinary Hospital, The Bird of Prey Clinic. The Snowy Owl was diagnosed with hypothermia and exhaustion. On Sunday the 18th of December 2011 the Snowy Owl passed away despite all of the effort and excellent care it received. Late November usually marks the beginning of the Snowy Owl’s arrival in Southern Quebec. These Owls migrate from the far North regions of Quebec and arrive fatigued. Sometimes even too fatigued to hunt and feed themselves. They just need to rest peacefully in agricultural fields and regain their strength. Last year the Snowy Owls didn’t come. American Robins Enjoying Unseasonably Warm Weather

America Robin feeding on fruit from a tree With fall temperatures remaining above average well into December the American Robin has been lingering around Southern Quebec in larger numbers than usual. Their late presence in large populations has lead to a depletion of fruit on trees. This will have a negative impact later in the season as Waxwings, Grosbeaks and other species of birds used to an abundant supply of food in the region will have to fly past the area and find food elsewhere. For now there’s plenty of American Robins to photograph. Their bright orange chest in combination with the beautiful array of colors found in the fruit trees make for vividly striking bird photographs.

Anyone accustomed to the outdoors is usually aware that a bunch of over excited crows could lead to a predator sighting. Anything from a mammal such as a Red Fox to a bird of prey like a Great Horned Owl. This weekend a Barred Owl I was photographing caught the attention of crows. It was the second time in two days that the crows decided to mouth off in an attempt to intimidate this predator. This time it was a little different. There were less crows than usual but they seemed more bold and determined. They got much closer to the Owl than they usually did. The action got further up in the trees and I knew it was impossible to capture a good image. I decided to leave my DSLR in Video mode and capture some of the excitement. On Wednesday Morning, November 23rd, 2011, Montreal woke up under a blanket of snow. The first real snowfall for the 2011/2012 winter season. For the folks occupying Victoria Square, it was an uncomfortable morning following an uncomfortable night. Many of the tents on the grounds are not designed for winter. Some are even equipped with permanent ventilation screens under a rain proof dome. Wind and snow impregnated many of the tents ill suited for the Montreal Winter ahead. Hardcore supporters of the Occupy Montreal movement could be seen cleaning pathways between tents with everything from their hands, rakes and some fortunate ones had shovels. Luckily the temperatures were a mild -2 Celsius that quickly warmed up above freezing. The days ahead are scheduled to bring higher temps and rain, sure to melt away any signs of this first snow. The Montreal Botanical Garden is in its final strides before shutting down all but the indoor greenhouses. On Monday October 31st you have until 9PM to take a last look at this year’s, The Magic of Lanterns. The 2011 theme, The Emperor’s first Procession. Touching the Berlin Wall in Our Own Back YardThe first thought in Peoples mind when you talk about Germany, apart from World War II, is the Berlin Wall. Many tourists, when visiting Berlin, follow the signs leading to what’s left of the Berlin Wall. Apart from a small symbolic remain, there’s also indications around Berlin as to where the wall once stood. The wall that used to separate East Germany from the rest of the world has now been replaced by a bustling modern cityscape. Modern high rise buildings spanning from what was once East and West uniting both sides as one. Not everyone will get a chance to visit Berlin and touch the Berlin Wall. While exploring Montreal I came across what seemed to be a Metro Station Entrance! I knew there weren’t any around the area. It was built on a vacant lot and sure enough the doors looked authentic. The graffiti etched in the glass lead me to believe it just wasn’t all that new. I snapped a few pictures and walked the sidewalk to the Lot entrance for a closer inspection. As I walked onto the lot I was quickly intercepted by a security guard who politely exclaimed, in french, “Sir, you can’t go near this!” I was surprised as there was not a single posted sign indicating there was no access. A mechanic discovers a Red-tailed Hawk jammed in the grill of a LexusWhen you photograph wildlife you always end up wondering if they’re going to make it. I’ve seen Juvenile Red-tailed Hawks land in front of me in the middle of an Urban Park. I’ve also seen them in permanent Rescue Shelters because of a life changing trauma, often inflicted by man. My few visits at L’UQROP proved that too many birds of prey, including the Red-tailed Hawk, fall victim to humans, too often. Thanks too Matt Whitehead, Lexus Mechanic, one Red-tailed Hawk owes its life to this man’s quick thinking, and efficient work. After a valiant rescue, the Red-tailed Hawk couldn’t fly. Matt brought the Hawk to Veterinarian Greg Moore. The bird sufferred minor internal injuries and a concussion, but Dr. Moore feels confident the bird will make a full recovery, thanks to Matt’s proper handling of the situation. Continue reading →

Spooky! Just in time for Halloween! "La Maison Hantée"Known locally in Montreal in French as “La Maison Hantée”, The Haunted House Restaurant was an Icon in Montreal. For years locals and tourists crowded the premises for a spooky theatrical experience. Guests were greeted by spirits who escorted them to their tables through a spooky maze of unpredictability. Ghosts waited on tables and served food cooked by more ghosts in the kitchen. Once the presentation was over, guests had the chance to relax with an after dinner drink as they enjoyed a Tarot reading. Once a month a lunch hour show was presented for a younger audience. The Haunted House Restaurant has been closed for over three years. The building was rated as unsafe and forced a permanent closure of the establishment. The Double-crested Cormorants is not a rare sight in and around the island of Montreal. There’s plenty of shoreline and habitat for these birds to strive as they migrate through the area or stay for the nesting period. You can observe these wonderful birds from May through October. They can often be found on rocks along rapids or inland within large well stocked ponds and lakes. The Double-crested Cormorants is found in greater numbers were the water flows more rapidly and rocks provide shelter away from the shoreline. The Montreal Back River (Rivieres des Prairies) and Parc du Centenaire in Dollard-des-Ormeaux are two great local spots to observe these wonderful birds. Unfortunately for the photographer the Back River population is too distant for photography. Marmotte Commune (Marmota monax) Treehog or Groundhog in a Tree? – by Steve Troletti This one got me by surprise. Although it wasn’t the first time I’d seen a groundhog in a tree, I sure wasn’t expecting to find one on this day. This little juvenile groundhog was a little hard to identify at first due to it’s smaller size. I’m guessing some predator must have made it run up the tree as a last resort. This little groundhog just might have been a little too far from its burrow. Red Fox, Coyotes and even Hybrid Fox/Coyotes roam around this area and groundhogs, especially little ones, or on the daily menu. A rare occurance in the Province of Quebec, Canada! Tremiscus helvelloides – Guepinia helvelloides Fungus This weekend as I was walking in a wooded patch of pine trees I came across fungus. I almost missed them at first! In an area that’s not very well lit due to the density of Pine trees, I almost walked by clumps of a fungus I had never seen before. Their gelatinous gummy bear texture and peach coloring was very peculiar. The ear shaped forms taken on by some of them made this fungus very interesting and intriguing. Upon examination I realized they grew in the top layer of pines and dried branches. They didn’t grow out of the soil itself. Photographing these fungus proved to be a real challenge! Female Juvenile Red-tailed Hawk in a Montreal urban Forest Juvenile Female Red-tailed Hawk Lately if you look up in the South Western Montreal Sky you can observe Birds of Prey in larger numbers than usual. It`s time for the Autumn Migration and although Montreal is not in a migration corridor we`re seeing Birds of Prey in large numbers this year. In just a few days this past weekend we spotted over a dozen individuals high above in the sky, migrating, or low and hunting. One lucky occurrence was this Large, yet beautiful Juvenile Red-tailed Hawk. We were approaching mid-day and the temperature was unseasonably warm and humid. Birds and other wildlife were making themselves scarce as they were fleeing from the uncomfortably warm weather. Probably one of the least known, least used, but one of the most useful tool for the outdoor photographer is the Right Angle Viewfinder. An indispensable tool for shooting low to the ground or when in complex situations while shooting Macro. It even comes in handy when shooting landscapes just below chest level. The Right Angle Viewfinder alleviates strains on your neck by allowing you to compose your scene without contorting your neck in twenty different unnatural positions. I’ve used the top name brand Right Angle Viewfinders (Nikon, Canon, etc…) costing upwards of $250.00. I was curious as to how the bargain brand units compared. At one sixth of the price the Seagull Right Angle Viewfinder gives you plenty of bang for the buck. The unit itself is smaller and lighter than the name brand units. A Little Facelift for the Leslie Hancock Garden

The Leslie Hancock Garden is nestled amongst large conifers just north of the main ponds in the heart of the Arboretum. It’s well sheltered from winds, cold weather and in the summer the sun has limited penetration. This makes this little part of the Montreal Botanical Garden warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. It’s sheltered location with just a few little dirt paths leading in and out of this garden also make it one of the least known and more often missed places in the entire Botanical Garden. This is all by design as the Leslie Hancock Garden is home to more southern plants that need the milder protected environment to survive the local winters.The protection from wind allows for snow to accumulate undisturbed to insulate a prized collection of Rhododendrons and Azalias. Batten Down the Hatches; Hurricane Irene Makes it to Montreal!

Yesterday’s media almost had me believing I’d see Noah’s Ark floating by my living room window by day’s end. Hurricane Irene has been down rated but still walloped New York City with heavy winds and rain. Late this morning Hurricane Irene’s influence in the Montreal region showed it’s dirty little nose. Rain and winds have been increasing at a steady pace yet it seems like very little damage to trees and the electric grid are in store for Montreal. What was amazing to see was the Doppler radar imagery from McGill University’s J.S. Marshall Radar Observatory. Montreal was such a tiny spec compared to the large mass of clouds devouring it. This may however bring misfortune to some shoreline birds and migratory birds as they try and venture inland to escape the storm. Did You Know? Black Walnuts, More than just food!

Black Walnuts grow in a tree just like many other fruits (Oranges, Apples, etc…) and are fairly large. They have a thick green husk that protects the nut inside and some say that’s the best time to pick them, when they are green, before they dry up. In order to get to the nut, the husk must be removed and that’s not all that easy. Various instruments are used in the commercial world to remove the husk in a productive way. A large tire rotating against a metal plate being one of the most popular methods. Rolling the nut under your foot on a cement sidewalk should do the trick for the occasional amateur. I for one use a small, sharp, quality pocket knife to slowly peel away at the husk. Doggy Poop Etiquette 101 – Photo by Steve Troletti Today while walking the City Streets of Montreal I came across a form of urban rebellion against citizen’s doggy Poop Management. A form of education in DOGGY POOP ETIQUETTE! While City Residents seem cooperative in picking up their dog’s poop it would appear they make quick work to dispose of it inappropriately before they even reach the first public trashcan. Trashcans can be hard to find in some neighborhoods, sometimes impossible in winter, but still no excuse for dumping any trash in the streets. One citizen has taken matters into his/her own hands and decided to take on the gigantuous task of educating his/her fellow residents in the art of Doggy Poop Etiquette. New Born Cicada drying it’s Wings next to It’s Exuviae – Photo by Steve Troletti The simple thought of the Birth of a Cicada has always fascinated me. There’s a fairly large bug that crawls out of the ground, climbs a tree, and minutes later an equally large bug, the Cicada comes out of its shell leaving behind an Exuviae, the exoskeleton. I haven’t quite figured out if the Cicada itself powers the little shell. It’s legs seem folded underneath its body, not part of the legs left behind on the exoskeleton. As it comes out you can see its small wings unfold and solidify as the entire newborn dries up in the open air. Survival at this fragile moment is not easy. After a day of record breaking heat the evening brought in thunderstorms and heavy rains… Early evening on Thursday July 21, 2011 a large mushroom cloud started forming in the south. It was very similar to those I’ve observed in the desert east of Los Angeles. After forming for an hour or so it created a lightning storm within the cloud that never seemed to hit ground. The electrical storm lasted for about an hour and a half as it headed south east. This cell was followed in from the North with a greater depression bringing in thunder, lightning, high winds and record breaking precipitation rates.

As I visit the community of Ile Bizard I can’t help but think that it was the inspiration for Toby Keith‘s 2006 album release “WHITE TRASH WITH MONEY“. A West-end stuck up, pretentious group of self indulged individuals gloating in their own self glory as they ridicule their East-end neighbors! A reality fueled by their own perturbed existence that barely reaches past their imagination. Bitter little old ladies cry wolf just to have innocent Coyotes assassinated by the dozen so that they can rule over their quaint little island in all tranquility with their inbred little Bichons. In the heart of this cesspool community that is Ile Bizard today, you can find what was once the most beautiful Nature Park in all of Montreal, The Parc-nature du Bois-de-l’Île-Bizard. Here’s Clip of a Juvenile Cooper’s Hawk Feeding on a tree days after leaving the nest. I was testing out the ability to capture video using my Nikon D300s, Nikkor 70-300 VR and a 2X Doubler on the lens to give me the equivalent of a 900mm lens. The TC I used is the Kenko N-AFs 2x Teleplus Pro 300. I chose this TC in the past as it gave me HQ comparable to the older Nikon 2X TC while supporting all the AFS and VR connections. Autofocus is naturally almost non functional at 300mm especially in low light situations. The Kenko TC also had the advantage of mounting on almost any Nikon lens while the Nikon TC-II has limited compatibility. As you may know the 70-300 VR is a good lens for the money but not a fantastic lens. The image quality is still passable for video and the Continue reading →

This Photo now in Print in Taiwan - CNA Newsworld January 2012 The Ecoological Solar House at the Biosphere – Photo by Steve Troletti On the old site of EXPO 67 in Montreal a large Geodesic Dome can be seen. It was the home of the United States of America Pavilion (USA PAVILION) during the 1967 EXPO in Montreal. In 1976 the Dome caught fire during renovations and the exterior acrylic structure burnt away. The site remained closed until 1990 when the Canadian Government, Environment Canada purchased the site to establish the Biosphère Environment Museum showcasing the water ecosystems of the Great Lakes-Saint Lawrence River regions. A recent addition to the Biosphere, sitting in it’s shadows is the Ecoological Solar House. (Not Spelled Ecological but Ecoological). Radio Canada in an investigative report (Enquête: Le Mauvais Berger) revealed inhumane treatment of animals at “Le Berger Blanc”. The images were quite shocking and disturbing as they were also amplified by the drama so often associated with television these days. What shocked me the most about the Radio Canada investigative report were the opening scenes that went more or less unmentioned by anyone else. Welsh onion about to flower… / Ciboule s’apprêtant à fleurir… – by Steve Troletti There’s more than just flowers at the Montreal Botanical Garden! The Economic Plant Garden displays plants for either their nutritional value or their fibres used in making cloth. A large part of this garden is dedicated to education versus the visual impact of ornamental plants. This doesn’t mean nature still doesn’t have something pretty to show us. This Welsh Onion is the perfect example. It first creates a round bulb at the upper part of the plant. This bulb dries up and slowly reveals a large spherical flower. I found this in-between stage to be visually stimulating. This year’s poor North American Weather created a photographic challenge with this plant. The Boulder / Le monolithe – IR – by Steve Troletti As you make your way to the southwest entrance of the Chinese Garden, at the Montreal Botanical Garden you will notice what appears to be a large Bonsai Tree alongside a large Boulder. It’s an artistic representation of one of the three elements represented in the Chinese Garden, “STONES”. The three elements being “WATER”, “STONES” and “PLANTS”. I chose to capture this exhibit in infrared illuminated by the morning sun. This angle well lit in the morning is in my opinion one of the best views giving the viewer an ensemble of the entire display, not only the “STONES”. The infrared setup consisted of a Nikon D60 mounted on a Manfrotto 055XPROb at around two feet off the ground. Élage Diouf – Masson Street Concert – La Rue Kitetonne 2011 – by Steve Troletti This weekend I stumbled upon a little festival, La Rue Kitetonne, on Masson Street. Live on the footsteps of Saint-Esprit Church was a group playing. I was pleasantly surprised and pleased by what I heard. The rhythmic upbeat World Music quickly carried me away and I stayed for the rest of the performance. Although I was tired from shooting wildlife all day their music picked me right up and within minutes I had the urge to start shooting some pics of their concert. I was ill equipped to shoot a concert. Ideally a D700 with Nikkor’s fine jewel the 70-200 f2.8 VRII would have made me a happy camper. All I had was a D300s equipped with Nikkor’s 35mm f1.8. For some wildlife photographers nothing is more challenging than capturing a bird in-flight. That takes some practice! Most of us start of with Gulls but Terns are smaller and much faster. June brings in thousands of Terns into the North East (USA / South East (Canada) and you have a limited amount of time to find a good spot were these birds are active near the shoreline in good light. Alonso / Massa – Ferrari Paddocks – 2010 Montreal Grand Prix – Trolettiphoto.com Archive Photo With Ferrari slated to compete aggressively against Red Bull in this 2011 Montreal Grand Prix we had Alonso and Massa sitting in 2nd and 3rd behind Vettel sitting in Pole followed closely by Webber in 4th. Heavy rains have halted the race at this time but chances for Ferrari to bring home a win are next to null with Vettel holding on to his number 1 spot, Massa in 3rd and Alonso in 8th behind Redbull’s Webber in 7th. Black-crowned Night Heron in Flight @ Sunset – by Steve Troletti Captured with a Nikon D300s – 195mm – 4/3000 sec – f8 – ISO 400 The usual scene this time of year is Sterns and Gulls flying around fishing and chasing insects. Egretts travel the shoreline for food and the Great Blue Herons patiently wait for prey alongside their little cousins the Black-crowned Night Heron with a little scuffling now and then. This particular Black-crowned Night Heron was just not a welcome site today. He was constantly harassed by Gulls as he tried to fish on a rock or attacked by Sterns as he flew away. He took his final flight into the Sunset leaving me with this great picture.

Like H1N1 it was taken out of proportion and a big North American crisis created to protect us, or distract us. The diminishing population of birds had contributed to a rise in insect population. Don’t forget that we not only affect birds with our industrialization, urbanization and destruction of habitat. Our intolerance, especially the intolerance of the agricultural industry has lead to numerous extermination of mass numbers of birds. Ichneumonoidea -Giant Ichneumon Wasp Laying Eggs in Bark by Steve Troletti This is by far the biggest Wasp I`ve ever encountered. As I travel along the Northern regions of our North American Continent I`m amazed at how large Insects and Arachnids can be in such extreme habitats. When I came across this Wasp the entire tree was covered with them. There were two varieties. This black colored Wasp measuring at least ten inches fully stretched out with its long ovipositors stretched out and a smaller orange colored variety. Although most of them seemed to have the same behavior there was some interaction between the two that lead me to believe there may have been males and females mating (See Picture Below). The Gift Shop at the Chinese Garden – Montreal Botanical Garden – IR – by Steve Troletti Last year’s Blue-Collar strike that hit the Montreal Biodome and forced its closure during the year of biodiversity also had a hard impact on the Montreal Botanical Garden. The strike forced additional cutbacks in addition to those of previous years and the gift shop in the Chinese Garden of the Montreal Botanical Garden is now closed. Its goods have been integrated with the main boutique but the Chinese essence of the boutique is lost. As venues and staff are being cut there’s less and less supervision at the Botanical Garden and the traces of decay and mismanagement are now more than ever apparent throughout the entire Garden. Chinese Garden – Infrared / Jardin de Chine – Infrarouge by Steve Troletti This infrared picture was taken at the Montreal Botanical Garden’s Chinese Garden. It was taken with a Nikon D60 equipped with it’s kit lens the $125 Nikkor 18-55 VR. This low end little wide angle zoom provides remarkable performance when working in IR as it has absolutely no IR HOTSPOT. When used intelligently, while understanding the limitations of this lens, it can provide extremely sharp and clear results. I used to work with the Cokin P007 IR Filter for infrared work. The Cokin P-Series is quite versatile in IR work as it is easy to remove quickly to make the appropriate setup. Unfortunately the low optical performance of this filter and light bleeding through the assembly forced me to migrate to the Hoya (R72) 720nm screw-on filter. From a distance all I noticed was a little white ball, brightly lit from the sun crossing the path ahead of me. Upon closer inspection I realized it was a spider carrying its egg sac. This may be a female Wolf Spider measuring an inch in length (Body Only). This little Mallard chick is pretty lucky. Apparently the sole survivor from maybe as many as a dozen or more little brothers and sisters. The perils are high for these little guys as the Pied-billed Grebe is known to drown the chicks in repeated violent attacks and many other predators lure in and around the pond looking for an easy meal…

Curious little insect the size of a Mosquito I haven’t yet identified. They started appearing on leaves in wooded areas at dusk. The low light conditions forced the use of a flash for lighting. Taken with a D300s and Nikkor Micro 105 VRII mounted on a Manfrotto 055XPROB. Used an SB-900 Flash hand-held, triggered with CLS and a small white reflector to balance the light. Not easy getting the SB-900 and a reflector in their without moving all the branches but with a little help I managed…

This is by far the largest turtle I’ve seen in the wild in Canada, Its shell measured just over two feet long. Unfortunately the opportunity to photograph this turtle was on a dark cloudy day in the woods. The low light situation, Mosquitoes and dense vegetation made it hard to get a good set of interesting photos. The nasty attitude of this turtle combined with powerful snapping action made it ever so difficult to clear the visual obstacles in front of its head. I decided to rely on a little Photoshop instead of loosing a finger!

Looks like even the trees on the outskirts of town can’t escape a tag or two. As entertaining as this may look like, it’s also a reflection of a growing problem in this Ile de la Visitaion Nature Park. The park is quickly becoming an intense source of litter pollution for the Montreal Back River which borders the entire length of the park as it becomes a haven for gang activities, drugs and prostitution. SQUIRREL DRINKING A CUP OF TIM HORTONS COFFEE – NOT PHOTOSHOPPED

The internet is full of opinionated people hidden behind a veil of anonymity offering them a false sense of security permitting them to dish out unfounded accusations. In the summer of 2009 I had a chance encounter with a squirrel running around in the woods with a Tim Hortons Cup. The squirrel was most probably attracted by the dried coffee and sugar at the bottom of the cup. Unfortunately the light was less than adequate and the squirrel always on the move in a densely wooded area surrounded by leaves. Lucky for me I was able to get a presentable pic. This video is the entire series as I shot it developed directly from RAW files and saved to JPEG without any editing to illustrate that the cup was present in real life and not a Photoshop trick as I am so often accused of.

This female was very agitated as two women were near her nest on the Boardwalk with two dogs. The signs clearly say NO DOGS, The Wildlife was clearly disturbed, but the two women had no idea their dogs were the source of disturbance. Even after a friendly explanation they were very upset that their little dogs could be discriminated against in such a way. The Black Tern, Chlidonias niger, is a small tern generally found in or near inland water in Europe and North America. As its name suggests, it has predominantly dark plumage. This bird’s underparts and throat are white with light brown streaks. Their face and the sides of the neck are light brown; they have yellow eyes and a yellow bill. The adult male is glossy greenish black on the back and crown; the adult female is glossy brown on these parts. They show light brown parts on the wings in flight. These birds nest in large marshes with dense vegetation from southern Canada to northern Argentina. The nest is a well-concealed platform built from cattails and other marsh vegetation. The Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is a large wading bird in the heron family Ardeidae, common near the shores of open water and in wetlands over most of North and Central America as well as the West Indies and the Galápagos Islands. An all-white population found only in the Caribbean and south Florida was once known as a separate species, the Great White Heron. The video is 6 minutes long and I could have doubled it easily with just two 40 minute photo sessions. The water levels are currently really low and it’s just a matter of time before the water rises and all this trash will be swept down river. I seriously believe that a city surrounded by shoreline that leads directly into the Ocean has a Civil responsibility to enforce laws to keep it’s shoreline as clean as possible.

Tons of distracting elements but still one of the better images I`ve ever captured when it comes to the American Bittern. It is a large, chunky, brown bird, very similar to the Eurasian Great Bittern, Botaurus stellaris. It is 59–70 cm (23-27 inches) in length, with a 95–115 cm (37 – 45 inch) wingspan. Although common in much of its range, the American Bittern is usually well-hidden in bogs, marshes and wet meadows. Usually solitary, it walks stealthily among cattails or bullrushes. If it senses that it has been seen, the American Bittern becomes motionless, with its bill pointed upward, causing it to blend into the reeds. It is most active at dusk. For those of you who have been following my photo-stream you should be quite aware of the fuss I made regarding the cleanliness and safety of the Montreal, Ahuntsic, Ile de la Visitation Nature Park and surrounding streets. I even took the trouble of documenting and reporting my finding to my close and very dear friend, Maire Tremblay! Osprey chased by Bald Eagle/Balbuzard pêcheur poursuivi par un pygargue à tête blanche, originally uploaded by Steve Troletti – www.trolettiphoto.com. At first sight I thought we were dealing with an intrusive Osprey attempting to intimidate the Juvenile Ospreys on their birth lake, as witnessed many times in the past. To my surprise, After observing the synchronized flight of these two large birds in the sky, at the other end of the lake, I quickly realized that the chasing bird was not an Osprey, but a mature male American Bald Eagle, endlessly chasing the juvenile Osprey to steal his precious fish held tightly in his claws! The slower Bald Eagle eventually had to retreat empty handed.
